RS
1973-2013: 40 years of RS

Introduction to the "LEICHTBAU" filosofy.

In general, any car lover will, someday, arrive to a crossroad. A terribly complicated place. The innocent will face a radical fork. A path to the left, and another path to the right, altough parallell (since they will never find each other). And these two paths are so opposite that they won’t give him any chance of ever cut short wavering between the two. Those who attempt to do so will fail. On the road on the left is the path to the enrichment of the vehicle. It is the evolution of techniques and products serving four wheels. Are new technologies, electronics, sensors, comfort. The evolution, the future of the industry to serve man. Nowadays more and more automobile willingly accepts the optional.
This is because technology increasingly provides the adaptation of products to essential accessories. The days when an "air conditioning" was an artifact of the condition of the car category (only the top of the range would possess it) are gone. Today is a "banal triviality." The password to enter this path on the left is therefore only one: EQUIPMENT. Because a car can be designed to be enriched with the good things life gives us. And also note that I am no longer talking about the cruise control or bi-xenon headlamps. Nothing of the kind... Since we are in 2009 I'm talking about things like the latest Lane Detour Warning (LDW), the ABL (Active Bending Lights), IDIS (Intelligent Driver Information System), the anti-submarining protection'''' ventilated seats with massage, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), the automatic anti-glare rearview mirror with compass… And so on… I think you get the idea.
This is the path preferred by the majority. It is the way of comfort, convenience. It is the way of refinement of detail, show-off. It is the fury of serving the gadget lover of the automobile as an object of worship.
Well ... forget everything, and I mean everything said so far. Because that is not our way. The road on the left isn’t the one we'll follow. We will go for another. On the right side. By the road where only one obsession exists: the total lack of “accessory” equipment to the vehicle. The harder and more radical way. Here we happily "despise" the motorist and his comfort. All the management philosophy of weight loss as one single purpose: the performance of the vehicle itself: it is now our keyword.
I proposed a very basic reflection, but one that, perhaps, most of us never did. We look for a few moments in the word "ACCESSORIES". As it is easy to see, accessory will be all that is not essential - in this case, of course, to the car. But if not essential, why the hell do we care about the accessories? I know why. For two reasons: laziness and selfishness (the dispensing of the benefit of the car on our behalf). Is that all car accessories are usually created to make life easier for the driver: from navigation (GPS) to vehicle control (PASM, PSM, and similar). In our path that we follow, the word "accessory" it is therefore absolutely PROHIBITED.
Because accessory inevitably means the introduction of weight. It is impossible to introduce an enhancement in the car without compromising its relation with weight. And what does that mean? Basic, of course! Weight means obstacle to locomotion. That is to say that what is gained for the benefit for the driver, is lost in harm of the car.
Ferdinand Porsche always warned everybody who worked with him not to complicate engineering. The easiest and poorest way to gain power is to cut the weight of the car. Much more important than power itself, is its relation with weight (the weight/power factor). It is the most basic rule for a race car. Also because we don’t need to be Einstein to realize that its much easier to stop a car with a fly in it, than with an elephant. That is our motto. It is the motto of all of us who chose the path on the right. The lighter a vehicle is, less effort will be required to the engine to move him. And that is why that for us, the accessories are luxuries that do not interest us. Worse, the accessories are things we loathe. They are insignificant things that will disrupt what we're completely focused on: the performance and vehicle speed. Hardcore.Hardcore. Hardcore. Once again this concept so dear to our philosophy of living a Porsche.
It costs me a lot to understand those Porsche owners who do not think so. And they are getting more and more, as each day passes. Of course the blame is of the brand itself, because at some stage in its life, it also had to go down the other way. Porsche AG is currently undertaking an ambidextrous. It does the left and right types of cars, although these are each time less and less. For them, the “porschistes” of the left path, I would have some advice: Aston Martin, Jaguar, Maserati. But ... unfortunately its not like that. Increasingly, the man, even the "Porsche" lovers realized that they can be demanding. Why twirl your neck if you can have a TFT screen with the image of the rear of the car on the dashboard. Why worry with parking. Let the car whistle!...
Proudly, we follow this path, even if we are scarce. Of course we are called radicals. Which is true. It is not normal to want to sweat like a pig, just to not have to bear the weight of an air conditioning. Or having to roll down your window by hand (retro style 1800) only to not have to bear the weight of an engine lift the glass. There is nothing "cool" to ask a girl to give the crank to raise a glass. That definitely won’t impress her... Neither is it normal to get back aches just because you got some banks without reinforcement, or ruin your ears because you toss the soundproofing of the car through the window. Goodbye mats. Goodbye carpet. Goodbye air bags. Goodbye weight. Experience the lightness. Crazy? Fools? Stupid? Retrograde? Yes, yes please. Thank you. We, however, prefer to call each other something else: “Porschistes”! Pure and tough in essence. And with great pride. Because our cars are designed in this spirit. The spirit of Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche. Our cars are designed to be the fastest. They are designed to get there first. Never in a humiliating second. A Porsche is synonymous of car racing. So it is not interested in comfort. Our comfort is to get ahead. Not to be seen. It's just ... being the best. And it is imperative to be light: "Lightweight" as well describe the English. LEICHTBAU.
That said, I present you the RS 73. Probably the best Porsche ever.

FUHRMANN'S VIGIL

1972.

Ferry Porsche managed to get Ernst Fuhrmann as the technical director and "Chairman" of the Executive Committee of the Porsche KG. Fuhrmann will be the first CEO of Porsche AG. Austrian by birth, will later be naturalized as German. Fuhrman will arrive at Porsche in Gmund, precisely in the year they begin to study the construction of the first prototype of the 356. Engineer of great feedback, it belongs to him the development of engines which were known by his name, used in the 356 Carrera and 550 Spyder. It will be his too, the idea of replacing the 911 by a car with a front mounted V8 engine. He even studied the end of production of 911.

Above all, as a Porsche lover, Fuhrmann was delirious with races. More than that… Much more than that. Both Ernst and his wife, Freida, were Porsche racing devotees, just like a religion. Each time a Porsche factory car was running, whatever country the race would be, Ernst and Freida lit a candle, placed in the window of their living room house. This devotion was widely known and began to take some kind of a sinister shape. Indeed, like a "urban myth" people started to think that, whenever a Porsche racing car withdrew from a race by breakdown or accident, in that same moment the candle placed in Fuhrman living room would suddenly blow away.

True or not, what is certain is that when it comes to power at Porsche, big changes will happen in the Porsche racing department. The Porsche family was in economic restraint. At Fuhrmann was requested big savings and a very tight financial management. It was decided the end of the funding programs of prototype racing. Still, this measure was a heavy twist in the life of Porsche, since it already experienced great glories like the 917 program. At the same time Fuhrman entered at Porsche, the FISA (“Federation Internationale du Sport Automobile”) decided to completely change the Regulations of the FIFA World Brands Championship, that from then on, it would only be raced by Touring cars, Grand Touring and Group 5 Prototype; these measures would be only be implemented in 1975th.

OUR FATHER WHO ARE IN WEISSACH...

On May 72, Fuhrmann decides to go and see “in loco” at the Hockenheimring, how the 911 S were running and almost collapsed there. What he went trough was humiliating and is going to leave him deeply depressed and troubled. What Fuhrmann went to see that day was Porsche 911’s being folded by Ford Capris and BMW. Furious, he went looking for Peter Falk, Rolf Sprenger and Norbert Singer, the latter known as "Mr. Motorsport. " Or Sir Weissach. It was him who was given the sporting future of the 911...

Singer is considered a genius (forgotten like so many others). Since he entered Porsche with the task of solving the overheating problem of the gearboxs of the 917 (which he did brilliantly and led to successes so widely known) it will be his responsibility's the RSR, 934, 935, 956, 962 and GT1 sport programes. At Porsche, they have an internal knickname for these team leaders. They call them "Dad", because they are the project leaders. Singer was a sort of Weissach’s mad scientist. It was the Father of all those cars - except for the Porsche 917 which had been Fathered by Helmut Flegl, in which team was Hans Mezger, Ferdinand Piech and the then newcomer Norbert Singer.
Well, Singer was the greatest Father of them all. He was the Father, for example, of the 935/78 chassis 006 - which will be known only as "Moby Dick". And this car is going to have such a great influence over him that, some "conaisseurs" say, he tried to recreate it when developed the GT1.

It would be Wendelin Wiedeking that will stop Sienger. One day in Zuffenhausen, Wendelin will ask Singer why Weissach has requested money to develop a new prototype that year, when they had won Le Mans and the main American endurance events. Times were clearly other. In the 90’s, Wendelin was now fully focused on restructuring the company. The transformation in what is today's Porsche: an ambidextrous company, focused on producing cars for “regular customers” as for “Porschistes”. In 1998, after the great victory at Le Mans, Wendelin will withdraw all the money that came from Singer in Weissach. That will be the end of Singer’s in Porsche. They officially ruled the end of the racing program at. Porsche. Where did the money go? Well, think a little bit there ...... exactly. The Cayenne program. Singer is then retired from Porsche, but one day Cristophorus “slips" and publishes an amazing photo: Singer in the wind tunnel with the model of the Carrera GT...

Those who know me, know I struggle against the indifference that many important people in Porsche were voted. There were hundreds of great people who passed by Porsche and that today are remembered only by a handful of people who insist on not to forget them. Norbert Singer had a “thing” in his hand that was waving a finger at the front and back; it was his trademark. This finger stuck was adopted by fans of Singer as a secret handshake. A greeting used only by “Porschistes” radicals: those who know who was who. Those who are keen to do justice to the memory of people, may they be dead or still alive, as is the case of Singer.
Stefan Huewe and Greg Martin made a point of running the prototype of Champion Porsche with a small sticker on the nose of the car that had the face of Singer. Therefore, now I am also with my finger in the air and proud to be a member of his Fan Club.

THE CRADLE OF RS

Back to Hockenheimring, alone in the pits was Porsche’s intern and Singer’s “protégé“, named Wolfgang Berger that, seeing Fuhrmann completely disoriented by the failure of Porsche in races, told him: "The one to blame for this is Michael Kranefuss (sporting director at Ford) who had the idea to create a Rennsport group car that could evade the FIA rules in terms of weight. Basically what he did was to take out of the car all that was unnecessary, and just added a rear spoiler. The result is what you see."
Fuhrmann was impressed. He left the place thinking about it. The logic was in that philosophy (of weight reduction) that, in fact, was essence to the very philosophy of Porsche. After all, the solution has always been inside the house Porsche. It just hadn’t been applied to the 911 yet.

The ball was then passed to Helmuth Bott, which in turn put Tillman Brodbeck against the wall. "Almost all the pilots who run in the 911 lost to their competitors in the turns. We studied the time they were doing on track, and we concluded that they lost time for the other while cornering"- told him. "Do whatever you want, but don’t show up without a proper solution to this".
Brodbeck was very young back then (today is director of Porsche Exclusiv). He wandered around Weissach among the parts, desperate for an idea, but without success. He began to despair…
He then remembered his Fiat 850 Fastback GT, his second 850, which came with a tiny bulge at the rear. A kind of lip…
Brodbeck then went to his old University, in seek of his old Professor of Aerodynamics, and asked him what he thought of that small bulge in the rear of his car, and which would have been the reason for Fiat to put it in the car. The Professor then looked carefully at it and hesitated… He ended up believing that it had more to do with the design than of aerodynamics!... Brodbeck, however, decided to risk it.

Furthermore, in 911, the essential of the bahaviour of the car is right at the rear of it. He “moved” to the wind tunnel at the University of Stuttgart (which was the Porsche's wind tunnel, KG) and was there for 5 all days. He took a metal sheet and was tying it around with welding wire. For days, he added wire. The end result was a handcrafted spoiler, made of solder wire. So rough that his colleagues had a laugh making fun of him. Not intimidated, he took it to the test pilot and future Porsche factory driver, Günther Steckkönig, who, unknowingly, had the honor of being the first to test that appendix in a 911. And he was truly impressed with it. It works, he said… Filled of enthusiasm, Brodbeck took the "homemade spoiler" to the design studios of Tony Lapine and asked him to turn it into a piece of fiberglass.
Lapine is one of the most compelling figures of the history of Porsche. He’s the one, as stated above, who was the "Father" of the "pig". Of his hands will born the famous "Ducktail" or "Burzel” in Germam. And because the Homologation rules for approval so imposed, the production model found himself "forced" to include this aerodynamic appendix.

" RACING IMPROVE THE BREED - "THE RETURN OF" THE HAMMER”.

It has always been the motto of Porsche, and Fuhrmann strongly believed in it, as he believed another one: "Race wins on Sunday bring sales on Monday", which also has always been the motto at Porsche.

The new 911, more competitive than the S, would have to be able to be homologated in Group 4 and would have to be more aggressive than the competition, including the BMW 3.0 CSL and Mercedes 350 SL. Norbert Singer needed 500 cars for the approval of the new model. The new 911 would carry a "new" six-cylinder engine, now with 2681cc and would resume the DNA of 911 R 1967 in terms of design.

For many years, the core people at Porsche had a "private name" to refer to their large engines.

Their best engines, their "bullet" or "armor" engines... Inside Porsche’s factory, everybody knew very well what were the engines that might be capable of integrating this category and those others who would never get there.

These engines – the best ones… - were called, in private, as "hammers"... And the RS, was born to get a "hammer" engine.

Because of this, the best engine was really in there, inside the 911 RS hood... The 911/83 engine was borrowed from the 2.4 S but was extended to 2687 cm3 capacity, developing 210 bhp (154 kW) (911 Standard possessed 180 hp) at 6300 rpm.

It's hard to believe that an engine can be extended, without changing much of the distance between the centers of the bore (the hole in the block where the cylinder moves the piston)…

The best explanation that I found, was given by Mark Wan; he said the biggest difficulty faced by Porsche engineers was how to squeeze more capacity but leaving the size of the engine unchanged. According to the initial calculation – although by then, Porsche had already developed a great potential for the original design – this block was expected to be increased to a maximum of only 2.7 liters. Anything larger than 2.7 liters would require a hole so large that the cylinder wall would become too thin to be reliable. As the 911 was designed with a view to GT endurance racing and it was always accepted that the philosophy of Porsche was reliability, it seemed that the Type 901 engine would never grow more than 2.7 liters.

However, a discovery was made during the creation of the Carrera RS 2.7... Nikasil introduced technology allowed the bore (the hole of the cylinder) to be increased from the original 2.0-liter unit and 80 mm for more than 95 mm without compromising the thickness of the cylinder wall.

Since the 911 was created, the cylinder it used was called "Biral", which is basically a cylinder of cast iron coated with "fins" of aluminum around them, to provide the cooling. And why not, all done in aluminum? Because the Pistons were also cast in aluminum. And as you know, the contact between two aluminum surfaces always result in greater friction and wear than of contact between aluminum and iron. Thus an all-aluminum engine, without any special treatment, would always result in a completely unfeasible solution.

As the 911 cilynders were made with two layers of different materials in casting, the cylinder wall were inherently thicker than those of a cylinder of pure aluminum, although, indeed, it’s very well possible that they could not provide superior mechanical strength.

Instead of the cylinder face in cast iron, the Nikasil treatment provided a layer of nickel-silicon carbide, usually by electrolytic deposition to the inner surface of aluminum cylinders. Once the Nikasil layer generates less friction than of cast iron, both durability and performance would come out enhanced.
Moreover, this layer was only a few hundred millimeters thick, what allowed the hole of the cylinder to be expanded significantly. This amazing technological process of treatment of the cylinders had already been used by Porsche in the 917.

And this was just the beginning. In fact, the Nikasil came to give the 911 engine a second stage of life, allowing the holes could eventually be increased to 102 mm (thus reaching a capacity of 3746 cc). The compression was unchanged (8.5:1), as also remained the same mechanical Bosch fuel injection. The same applies to the 5 speed gearbox (915). In regarding the suspension, it has been modified and hardened. Of course the weight ended up making all the difference, 975 kg for the Sport version and 1075 kg for the Touring version. In terms of acceleration, this meant a difference of only three tenths of a second between the two versions (5.5 and 5.8 seconds at 0/100km/h) reaching a maximum speed of about 245 km / h.

THE RS "MACHO MAN" - THE "POSITIVE NEGATIVE"…
Deranged Marketing of 70 years.

And again ... Tony Lapine, and that famous "STYLE PORSCHE" that I revere so much. The design firm of Stuttgart which he has created, just to be later extinct in order to give way to the Austrian "Porsche Design".

The protagonists of this chapter, strictly speaking, are not just Tony Lapine. The culprits will also include Georg Ledert, Director of Publicity, Baron von Hanstein, who was a handy man capable of doing almost anything, Eric Strenger, man of the classic posters and Christophorus, and such a Herr Plocher, who I will explain ahead who he is.

The natural description of this new car should be “911 2.7 S”. But because of all the setbacks that Fuhrmann saw on track with the 911 S, Porsche appeal to the Office of Marketing for something new, something different... Tony Lapine, who was already a bit insane (in a good way, of course, as he was the creator of the 917 “pink pig”) wanted to impose on Porsche’s Conservatives, the most aggressively marketing play the brand's history has ever known, although in fact, it is very conservative by nature…

The first two premises:
1 - This is the first Porsche production with over 200 hp.
2 - This is the first production car to include a competition spoiler.

Given this, the following guidelines were established:

1 - The cars are all white, to symbolize the national colors of Germany in the race car (red for Italy, blue for France and green for England ).
2 - The name "Race" will be represented everywhere, "ad nauseam", to emphasize the nature of the car.
3 - Has several stickers to highlight the nature of competition.
4 - Is a car just for men. May it be clear, this is not a 911 for women.

Revived the name CARRERA - that originally (in 1955) was used to commemorate the victories in the Porsche Carrera Panamericana in the 50s (1953) - and add to it the suffix RS, that means Rennsport (that means Race).
As said, because the RS is designed for racing, the "script" that will be used is the one that had been placed on the 356 Carrera 1500 GS 55. Tony Lapine adopt it in general, with only minor amendments. The small line above the "C" is erased, and the script itself becomes less extended. Tony will create a representation of the letters "Carrera" and the letters "RS".

It’s important to mention again the great designer who was Herr Plocher. He was a true artist of Design… It was he who almost always drew by hand the ideas that were brewing in that department of "Style Porsche". He drew the letters "Carrera" and posted the sketch in a bulletin board and let it stay out for a day. The next day, he would slightly changed the design again and oncemore, left the sheet on the wall. And so on until the final result was reached. Note that the side letters "Carrera" were inspired on the ones that belonged to the Ford GT40… This process was aided by Eric Strenger, another master of design.

And just like that, the brand image of the car was created. An image that will become a cult. A "duck tail", two side stickers in contrast with the color of the body, but matching the color of the wheels and a sticker on the back.
Graphically the first prototypes are ready for the clash of press and market entry. Tony Lapine and Marketing Department quickly develop the photographs of the factory (werk pictures) and the traditional model catalog.

And then comes the story of the masculinization of the RS. The sexist Porsche...
At one point, the following message was written in a very subtle way in the publicity campaign: “Only 500 men will drive the new Carrera"!...
Once, Georg Ledert was confronted by a journalist with this sentence. If they would only make 500 RS, why did they ended up making more than three times that much? And he replied "No, that number was intended only to the German market."

Most “porschistes” might have never noticed the flip-over that Tony Lapine made in the design of the RS stickers... The car was driven by Jurgen Barth at the official photo session, and on the side of the RS, were pasted "Carrera" stickers, but not the way that they will later be known. To understand better this change, the letters "Carrera" appeared painted in positive, dark color and contrasting with the white of the bodywork. The catalog was made, was printed and distributed.... However, one day, casually looking for one of the negative images, the team of Tony Lapine noticed the spectacular effect that caused that script on the negative, with the letters in the same color as the body (although more confusing) . And when Tony set his mind on something, no one could make him change it... And so, it was that the way they should definitely get the markings of RS.
What caught his attention in a negative entry, was the fact that it wasn’t noticeable when near the car, but only when you look from afar. When later asked what the reason for this somersault, he had no problems to say: "I was kidding. When people came close to the car, and looked at the inscription, they didn’t realize any of it.”

Clearly, this situation had a bit of funny in it... with Porsche being forced to produce a correction to the catalog and correcting the inscription "Carrera" of the stickers. For the public, however, this change meant nothing to them, since the first time that the car will be presented in October 1972 at the Paris Motor Show, it already will present the "negative" sticker version.

To get an idea of the impact that the RS had at the time, it must be emphasized that the first 500 to be produced for homologation will be sold out, even before the Paris Motor Show opening. The remaining 500 will also serve to accreditation, but in Group 3. As the story goes,it’s sad that in only the first day of the opening of the Paris Motor Show, will have been sold 51 RS units.

The stickers of the RS will be an optional. And they will be subject to rules: available only in red, blue, green and black, they will have to match the color of the Fuchs wheels of the car.

When the RS came out in the 70s, Jerry Sloniger, German journalist, wrote that it had made perfect sense if the letters "Carrera" had been placed mirror inverted in the hood, so that they could be read by the other cars that RS would be overtaking...

RS SPECIFICATIONS

Welcome to the RS confusion. Generally, over the years, Porsche has got used the market to distinguish the same model in two versions, the "touring" and "sport." The rule is basically the same and in modern cars, though the name has changed (moved to "Comfort" and "Clubsport") it is precisely the same logic. The first version is for “day-to-day” use, the second is devoted to the competition. It is easy therefore to understand the differences between the versions in a 993 or a GT3 RS.

In a RS 2.7, however, it will be completely different. This is because their versions will be twice as many, compared to the normal dichotomy. And it gets an even more complicated scenario, has it’s been worsened by the hundreds of "Knock-off's" that are currently re-created, and that lately confused and mixed all specifications...

In Fuhrmann’s idea, Zuffenhausen should provide Norbert Singer the 500 units he needed to racing homologation, but in a way that could be configured differently, putting most of them closer to the S series, in order to serve also the Porsche customer that was less inclined to race.

Therefore, the 911 RS was developed from the “F program” and could be specified for the client in one of four ways that will indicate below.

To provide for the RS Homologation, Norbert Singer and Porsche built the first car in 1000 (500 +500) in ultra-lightweight version of RSH (Rennsport Homologation). The objective, since they were sporting approval, was to make it possible to put as less weight as possible on the vehicle. These 911 RSH were incredible: “bicycle” type wheels, seats that looked like they were made out of cardboard, plastic door handles taken from the Fiat 600 and even the famous Porsche shield in the hood turned into a sticker. All in the name of weight, which is to say, his absence...

All these cars were brought to public scales (weighbridges) located in Stuttgart to be weighed, and they all measured 960 kg. After weighing, it was issued a weight conformity certificate for purposes of approval, and each car then returned to the factory. After that, they were available to customers who could buy these 911 RSH in other versions.

A curiousity is the fact that, as customers were ordering the RS and as these were being converted to the required specifications, all "radical" and "improvised" interiors were being placed in other following RSH, that would have to go to be weighed in the scale. That is to say, all the different chassis - as they were ready to be weighed - were always using the same interiors from it’s predecessors. At the end of "triple" batch of 500 RS (total production will be 1580 units (up to December 1972 319 units were produced - the last one to be produced in July 1973) only 17 are pure RSH.

THE CUSTOMER CHOICE’S

Once the initial task of the approval was completed, the RS then returned to Zuffenhausen and was put on sale, leaving the customer to choose the desired version, according to their interest in different specifications. There were four versions to choose from:

1) VERSION RSH - as described above. The version of the approval. Only 17 cars were ordered in this version.
- The sticker side "Carrera" mandatory black.

2) RS VERSION "MIT SPORTAUSSTATTUNG", "SPORT" OR "Lightweight" (OPTIONAL M471 - Porsche introduced the "M" in 1970) - in my opinion, the option of conversion more interesting. It is radical, but not to the point of using fifth quality materials or "borrowed". This quality increase in the construction of the RS only meant an extra 15 kg which, compared with the RSH version, is very little. That is what I like to call the "hardcore" version. 200 units were produced for this version.

The M471 includes:

a) minimum insulation of the body – which compromised the soundproofing (no sound insulation).

b) minimum insulation inside the doors.

c) Glass windows manually activated.

d) thin carpets.

e) rubber mats.

f) ultralight nylon Buckets seats from Recaro (driver + passenger).

g) rear seats DELETED.

h) clock DELETED.

i) sun visor DELETED.

j) darkened glass visor.

l) Porsche symbol / shield as sticker (just the chassis November 1972 to February 1973).

m) set of stickers side "Tony Lapine - Carrera."

n) "Carrera RS" sticker on the spoiler.

n) thiner glasses.

o) plastic fiber bumper.

p) aluminum engine cover.

q)Stock “Duck Tail” made in fiberglass and aluminum grille.

r) Fuchs wheels and wider tires (195/60 6x15 7x15 front and 215/60 rear).

s) reinforced stabilizer bar.

t) speedometer with 300 km / h.

3) RSL VERSION "TOURING" (OPTIONAL M472) - the version called "comfort" or "luxury". It will represent the bulk of orders - units produced 1308. The most funny and even ironic, is that customers often decided to buy the most domesticated versions, and after some time, they would seek to make them more aggressive, by changing specifications. It has always been so throughout the ages in Porsche.. This version of "touring M472" RS comes much closer of the 2.4S. Differs from the steering wheel, which is replaced by a 380 mm one. Compared to the M471, in the name of comfort, about 100 kg are increased, most of it distributed by the passenger compartment. The back Script "Carrera RS" is made of plastic ("Carrera" in black and "RS" in metal) instead of stickers.

4) VERSION RSR "MIT SPORTAUSSTATTUNG", "Rennsport Rennen (OPTIONAL M491) - also known as version" Norbert Singer". It was the competition version, with the body, fenders and Fuchs wheels extended, roll bar and an bigger engine pushed to 2.8 liters. The price was almost the equivalent of two RS. RSH cars were stripped of engines and were pushed by hand off the street, to the workshops Motorsport (pre-Weissach) that were in Werk 1. Only then received the engine prepared by Hans Mezger. 55 units were sold in this RSR version.

COLORS OF RS

The most famous of all which, incidentally, was "Special Color" in the RS (had to be ordered as an more expensive extra) was the Grand Prix White. The colors catalog from Porsche put available for 1973, included 8 Standard and 20 Special colors. For the RS, there was always the limitation that imposed on those who wanted the stickers, it was mandatory that they matched the color of the Fuchs rims. Therefore the color choice of the Carrera side stickers was limited to black, red, green and blue. This little rule is very important and unfortunately it is ignored, even by the original owners of RS (I don’t even mention the “replicas”) as in an official Porsche exhibition of 40 years (I don’t say which on was it…) was one in this situation!... who insist on misrepresenting the order of things.

There are two errors that are common to see:

1 - a different color side stickers, part from the 4 possible.
2 - Matching the body color with the color of the Fuchs wheels, instead of being the decal to match the rims.

PRICES

Naturally, they varied according to specification. Porsche was concerned with the approval of the first 500 cars, so decided to put the RS on the market with a very attractive price (taking into account the price of a normal 911). The M471 version costed then 33 000 DM (German marks) and 35 500 DM version M472. In the second batch of 500 RS, the prices were, respectively, 34,000 DM and 36,500 DM. A RSR version cost the astonishing price of 59,000 DM.

THE MYSTERY OF RS LIGHTER THAN THE LIGHT S

There may be some who say that this issue is peaceful, but is not. For many years one have always thought that using the factory information, it would be the safest way to obtain the correct information or clarification. Well, I have bad news…

To expect that Porsche clear out whatever issue it might be, is a utopia, in which even the most innocent shouldn’t believe.

Firstly because much of this information is not even properly kept in the factory records.
Moreover, we know well the stories that have emerged over the years, notably with the "real" record of 901. The real question of "lightness" of the RS already has aroused extensive discussion, and truth be told, at least it had the gift of entertaining..
The Porsche was even accused of distorting reality by providing certain customers RS more "lightweight" than to the general public. This question, which today is basically only of interest to RS owners, led to much controversy, particularly because of the many replicas that are always showing up. I myself have personally talked to people that crossed the Atlantic and were tricked with very well-made counterfeit RS, some of them in Germany.
In designing the new RS, steel panels of lesser thickness and aluminum panels were used, that latter become the cornerstone of the RS. In addition, of course that other lightweight materials were used in other parts of the car. Therefore, it should be of matter to understand what was common or different between the M471 and M472 versions:

GLASS: The windshield and rear side windows of the car were ordered to Belgian company Glaverbel, since they were far thinner than the German made. (M471 and M472).

GLASS: The front side windows and rear glass were produced by Sekurit (M471 and M472).

METAL THINESS: (0.7 or 0.8 mm thick):

- Roof.
- Front ???.
- Hood.
- Rear quarter panel.
- Doors frames.
- rear seats area.
- Front water lines.
- Hood floor.
- Interior upper dash part.
- Dashboard.

(M471 and M472 but only in the first 500 ***)

PLASTIFIED FIBERGLASS - front and rear bumper and bonnet (M471).

PVC coating - Fully waived, with the exception of the wheel arches (M471 and M472).

Upon removal of the suspicions regarding the existence of RS built lighter than others, Peter Falk came in Porsche’s defense and had a curious statement: "It was never a purpose of Porsche to build different RS’s, consciously and voluntarily". What meant to admit that this has indeed happened.

In fact, this production inconsistency was due mainly to two premises. The first relates to some archaic productive process that although modern, were light years from the ones adopted today. The second was due to shortage of "lightweight" materials. And the heart of the problem lies precisely here: Porsche, when the supply of lighter metals - like aluminum - ended, was forced to resort to "heavy" materials from the 911 2.4 production. One thing is for sure, the first 1000 “RS” (the homologation ones) haven’t suffered any scarcity of material - which will make them 100% closer to the initial concept. Regarding those made after this second round, RS no longer needed to be weighed. The “records” is not unanimous as to the date on which the "source of lightness" dried up. Konradsheim says it was in April 73. Others say that the RS # 1036 was the last. Peter Morgan says it was from the chassis # 1230. Because of this, the original RS ended being made more “similar” to the "normal" 911 series production. That is why the famous thumb test (by pressing firmly into the aluminum roof) was no longer desirable, because many of them waited in vain for it to revert to the original shape!...

THE RS HOMOLOGATION, AND THE RS PROTOTYPES

Curiously, the approval of the RS did not occur with the 500. º car. This only happened in January 29th, 1973 with chassis # 528. The FIA recognized the Carrera and certified it in order to belong to Group 4 “Grand Turismo”. Even more funny, the FIA got late in delivering the documentation, and on the following week, Porsche sends to the 24 hours of Daytona two RSR that, because of such delay, ran as prototypes.

The FIA Approval Process dates of November 27, 1972, and has the number 637 - Appendix J, awarded to “Porsche, KG”, for model year 1972 and 1973. Note that in Porsche it always existed the “rule” of the production being structured in function of the summer vacation; Whatever the model, it was always produced only until the end of July. The production line of new models was always prepared during the month of August, to be possible to start production in September.

Regarding the timeline, it makes more sense to talk about the prototypes before speaking exactly about the car. In the case of the RS is different.

They were purposely left to the end and they are also part of that "Porsche’s enigmatic limbo". Firstly because the first 10 (there are those who argue that were only 9) chassis are not properly RS. They are nothing less than "pure" “S", although modified to have engines with a capacity of 2.7 liters and assembled in April 1972. These cars were the prototypes for the RS, although they didn’t look a lot like them. They didn´t even had any rear spoiler… Some even kept the "S" on the badge.

The scheme was very well disguised by Porsche since the prototypes were enrolled in race events. At least one of them was registered in Austria.
The numbering of the chassis of the RS just started at number 911 360 0011, and the Porsche left the first 10 numbers to renumber former “S” 911 and S / T.
The fate of these 10 (9?!?!?!) cars was to be delivered to the factory race car drivers in order to race them, as well for the preparation of catalogs and press presentations, "test drives" and exhibition in auto exhibitions. In fact, this is indeed the information given by George Konradsheim.

However, according to John Starkey, and based upon the information that Porsche began providing in letters sent to the RS owners who wanted to see clarified some issues raised by dubious VIN of their cars, it was known that the gap in numbering the first chassis of the RS was not intended to the prototypes, with exception for chassis # 911 360 0001. The prototypes were, in fact, the chassis # 0011 to # 0018. The chassis 0019 and 0020 were the first two RSR. Regarding the remaining first 8 cars, it is not known what has happened to them.

Chassis # 911 360 0001 was a 911 S / T renumbered Sobieslaw Zasada and used by the Rally of Poland in July 1972 and had a strong accident. Apparently, the chassis 911 360 0002 will result of the renumbering of the 911 S / T # 911 230 0841 and have run along the Österreichring Strahl Race Team in July 1972, in the form of RSR.

The first RS that appears in many books with American registration "First RS" will be merely symbolic, since this car is chassis # 911 360 0016, ie, the car that was first exhibited at the Paris Auto Show in October 1972.
Porsche also ended up confirming that the chassis # 911 360 0017 was used as the RS prototype show car in the preparation of catalogs.

THE BARON'S "LITTLE" RECORD

As is well known, the baron was a unique character in the universe of Porsche. Public Relations, race car driver, Director of Sports Division etc, etc., and was known as the "RENN BARON" (Race Baron).

In the summer of 73, at 62 years old, von Hanstein - in a genious move of marketing and advertising - to promote the new RS, and with the sponsorship of Continental (at that time interested in promoting revolutionary Conti TS), Porsche takes to be world recordist of 10 miles and the 10 km at standing start, in a series production vehicle.

A small reference for the bibliography.

As this is only a forum, I'll just mention some, at least to take this opportunity to just point out some good sources.

In truth, much of this information was not collected from a single book. I confess that, although it implicates more work, these are all things that I have religiously kept for several years… Sometimes little things are taken from other forums, for example. I could also put even more, but then it would fall into exaggeration.

However, I would be grateful if someone could correct any mistakes, because I'm very bad on issues more related to mechanical and I understand nearly nothing about it.

What always strikes me the most curious are the most personal aspects and the stories that develop beyond the cars themselves.

As for RS, I submit these books as reference. Very honest and good price. A special mention for what is considered the Bible of the RS, the RS CARRERA book of Dr. Thomas and Dr. Georg Gruber Konradsheim published by GAD in Austria. It is a limited edition of 3000 copies. Very expensive, very rare but very special. Is the RS of books.

The credit of the images is not my course and the list of the chassis is of “http://www.classicscars.com/”.

Other RS will follow.
